Groundbreaking celebration

With a groundbreaking celebration on April 23, 2025, Western Sky crossed a significant milestone on the road to building a new, nonprofit nursing home in Grant.

The Western Sky board formed in 2022, when Golden Ours Convalescent Home closed in Grant, leaving the community without an option for long-term care. It was a three-year effort to reach the point where construction could begin. During that time, the board members and fundraising committee of Western Sky, along with consultant Tim Groshans, worked hard to make their vision a reality.

The Perkins County community fueled that vision as well. Nearly $4 million has been raised in support of the new Western Sky facility.

"None of us are here without you," board president Mark Bottom said at the groundbreaking. "The amount of community support in this is off the charts, and I'm tremendously proud of our community."

Board member Steve Loeffler, who also works with the fundraising committee headed by Doris Olsen, agreed. "We've had so many people step forward and do things for us," Loeffler said. "We just can't thank you all enough."

Senior Insight consultant Tim Groshans, who currently lives in Kearney, but is from the Grant community, has a positive outlook for Western Sky's future. “I take great pride in what I do, so rest assured, we are going to do this the right way," Groshans said at the groundbreaking. "I can’t wait to have long-term care back in Grant.”

The ceremony was followed by a free barbecue at the Perkins County Fairgrounds, prepared by the Grant YDC.
