What is Western Sky Community Care Center?
Western Sky Community Care Center (WSCCC) is a 40-bed, nonprofit skilled nursing home that is under construction in Grant, Nebraska.
The previous long-term care facility in Grant, Golden Ours Convalescent home, was owned and operated by Perkins County Health Services (PCHS). Golden Ours closed in July 2022, but community members recognized the need for continued nursing home care in Perkins County.
Western Sky's founding board members--Mark and Renae Bottom, Steve and Chris Loeffler and Genie Bishop--worked closely with PCHS and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services to acquire the existing nursing home bed licenses from Golden Ours. PCHS granted approximately 8 acres of land on the northwest edge of Grant as a site for a new facility. Diane Hagan and Dan Hughes were added to the board as members in 2023, the same year Western Sky was awarded nonprofit status as a 501(c)3.
The effort to secure construction funding through the USDA was completed in 2025, with a groundbreaking held on April 23 in Grant. The goal for completion of the facility is March 2026.
As of June 2025, the capital campaign to support the project has raised nearly $4 million in donations and pledges. Fundraising efforts continue, to meet requirements from the USDA for operational funds on-hand at opening.
